How do I take/use this medicine?

Tinzaparin may be injected by yourself or by your doctor.

If you are injecting Tinzaparin by yourself, your doctor will teach you how to do the injection.

Inject Tinzaparin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not inject more or less than instructed by your doctor. Follow your doctor's instructions exactly.

Tinzaparin is usually injected beneath the skin (subcutaneously).

Only these areas are suitable for injection:
- the lower abdominal area around the navel (belly button), OR
- the upper part of your thigh (choose a fleshy area)

If you are injecting at the lower abdomen, avoid the area 2 inches around the belly button.

Inject yourself at a different spot each time to prevent hardening of the skin and soreness at the injection site. Do not inject into any area that is scarred or bruised. Each new injection spot should be at least 1 inch away from the previous injection spot.

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Wipe the area with an antiseptic swab. Using your thumb and forefinger, pinch a fold of skin in the area.

With a quick motion, insert the needle at a 45 or 90 degrees angle. Make sure the entire needle is inserted into the skin fold. Press the plunger. Do not release the skin fold until you have completed the injection. Remove the needle by pulling it straight out. Now, you can let go of the skin fold. Do not touch or rub the area after injection.

Do not inject into muscle.
Do not expel the air bubble from the syringe before injection.
Do not mix Tinzaparin with other injections.

Throw away the used syringe as instructed by your doctor. Do not dispose in the normal household waste.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions or any other illnesses:

- kidney disease
- liver disease
- thinning of your bones (osteoporosis)
- low platelet count or suffer from cancer
- recent brain, spine or eye surgery
- an artificial heart valve
- diabetes

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Tinzaparin.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are being treated with Tinzaparin.

Keep all appointments with your doctor as he needs to closely monitor your response to Tinzaparin. Make sure you have your blood tests done as scheduled by your doctor.

Do not switch to another brand of Tinzaparin or to other medicines similar to Tinzaparin, such as enoxaparin, nadroparin or dalteparin unless your doctor has instructed you to do so.

Do not take part in activities in which you may fall or get injured such as contact sports. Report all falls and injuries to your doctor as there could be internal injuries which may not be obvious to you.

Take special care when shaving or handling sharp objects to avoid cutting yourself. Use a soft toothbrush when brushing your teeth to reduce the risk of gum bleeding.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are allergic to heparin, other medicines similar to Tinzaparin, or pork products.

Alert your doctor if you have or ever had any of these conditions:

- bleeding disorders or problems with blood clotting
- stomach ulcers
- stroke or bleeding in the brain
- high blood pressure
- bacterial infection in your heart
- history of low platelet count during treatment with heparin or other medicines similar to Tinzaparin

If you are going for a procedure where spinal or epidural anaesthesia is injected into your back, inform your doctor that you are using Tinzaparin.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Tinzaparin is a blood-thinning medicine that is given as an injection.

Tinzaparin reduces the formation of harmful blood clots in your body.

Tinzaparin is used to prevent or treat deep vein thrombosis (also known as DVT or blood clots in the leg veins) and pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs). You may be at risk of getting such blood clots after surgery or if you are bed-bound most of the time.

Tinzaparin also prevents the formation of blood clots in the tubing during kidney dialysis.

What side effects could I experience?

Tinzaparin may cause skin rash and minor bruising at the site of injection.

Tinzaparin may cause you to bleed more easily. Alert your doctor if you get any unusual bruising (large bruises or several bruises especially if they appear by themselves or if they cover a large area), or bleeding that takes a long time to stop (for example, too much bleeding when you floss or brush your teeth). Alert your doctor if you notice blood in your urine, bowel movements or if you get a nose bleed.

If you develop hot flushes, difficulty in breathing, skin itching and redness, inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Tinzaparin may cause other side effects. Consult your doctor if you have unusual problems while being treated with Tinzaparin.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool place. Do not store above 25°C. Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, Tinzaparin is no longer effective and should not be used.

Keep out of reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- other blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin, ticlopidine, clopidogrel, dipyridamole
- painkillers known as NSAIDs, such as aspirin, diclofenac, mefenamic acid, ibuprofen
- certain high blood pressure medicines
- digoxin (a heart medicine)

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
