  • PROGUANIL 100mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

If you are taking Atovaquone+Proguanil for the prevention of malaria, start 1-2 days before travel, continue during travel and for 7 days after leaving the area. If your trip is longer than 28 days, discuss with your doctor how you should take this medicine.

For the treatment of malaria, take Atovaquone+Proguanil exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course unless otherwise directed. If you do not complete the course, the malaria infection may not clear completely.

Take Atovaquone+Proguanil together with food or a milky drink to improve absorption. You should take your medicine at the same time each day. If you vomit within one hour of dosing, you should repeat the dose.

If you are giving this medicine to a child who cannot swallow tablets, you may crush the tablets and mix them with milk or food just before giving it to the child. Ensure that the child swallows the entire mixture in order to receive the full dose of the medicine.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

If you are taking Atovaquone+Proguanil for the prevention of malaria, remember that this medicine only reduces the risk of getting malaria. This medicine does not totally prevent malaria.

Therefore, in addition to taking this medicine, you must also take preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites. Use an effective insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to reduce exposure and avoid going out between dusk to dawn. Effective insect repellents should contain at least 20-33% diethyltoluamide (DEET).

The symptoms of malaria are fever, chills, headache, muscle pain and a flu-like illness. Consult a doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms during travel, and anytime within 1 year after leaving the area, especially within 3 months of your return.

If you suspect that you have malaria, it is very important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Do not delay treatment.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Do not breastfeed while being treated with this medicine.

Alert your doctor if you have kidney problems. You may need lower doses of this medicine if you have kidney problems.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

This medicine contains Atovaquone and Proguanil.

This combination of Atovaquone and Progunail is used for the treatment and prevention of malaria.

What side effects could I experience?

You may experience stomach discomfort, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and headache.

This medicine may cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Alert your doctor if any of the side effects become severe or intolerable.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines:

- metoclopromide (a medicine used to relieve nausea)
- antibiotics such as tetracycline, rifampicin or rifabutin
- indinavir (an antiviral)
- warfarin (a blood thinner)
