How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Montelukast exactly as directed. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Montelukast must be taken regularly for it to work well. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor. Your condition may worsen if the medicine is stopped suddenly. Montelukast cannot relieve an acute asthma attack. You should continue to keep your "rescue" inhaler by your side at all times.

You may take Montelukast with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. It is best taken in the evening.

If you are taking it to prevent asthma that is triggered by exercise, you should take Montelukast at least 2 hours before exercise, but do not take more than once a day. You should continue to keep your "rescue" inhaler by your side at all times.

Montelukast granules should be taken directly in the mouth or mixed with a spoonful of cold or room temperature soft foods such as applesauce, carrots, rice or ice cream. You may also dissolve Montelukast in a spoonful of cold or room temperature baby formula or breast milk. Do not dissolve the granules in any other liquid.

Granules that have been mixed with any kind of food cannot be stored for future use. All leftover portions should be thrown away. You should mix up a fresh dose each time. DO NOT open the packet of granules until you are ready to use it. The granules must be consumed within 15 minutes of opening the foil packet.

A drink of water or milk may be taken after the granules have been swallowed.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Alert your doctor if your asthma symptoms seem worse or if you need to use your "rescue" inhaler more often.

Montelukast will not relieve an acute attack of asthma. You must use "rescue medicines" such as an inhaler to treat an acute attack of asthma. Ask your doctor about what you should do when you have an acute asthma attack.

The chewable tablet form of Montelukast contains phenylalanine and may not be suitable for you if you suffer from phenylketonuria.

When should I not use this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you suffer from liver disease or phenylketonuria (a condition where the body lacks an enzyme to break down the amino acid phenylalanine).

Do not give Montelukast to babies and children unless instructed by the child's doctor.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Montelukast is used to treat asthma.

When taken regularly, Montelukast helps to prevent the chest tightness, wheezing and breathlessness that is common in asthma. It may also be used to prevent breathlessness that is triggered by exercise or physical exertion.

Montelukast is meant to be taken long-term. It is not meant for fast relief during acute asthma attacks.

What side effects could I experience?

Montelukast may cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

You may also experience headache, stomach discomfort such as nausea, indigestion or diarrhoea, tiredness and flu-like symptoms. These side effects are usually mild and should get better as your body adjusts to the medicine. If these problems persist or get worse, let your doctor know. Do not stop taking your medicine unless instructed to do so.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor if you are taking a TB medicine called rifampicin, or epilepsy medicines such as phenobarbitone, carbamazepine or phenytoin.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
