  • MOXONIDINE 400mcg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Moxonidine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Moxonidine must be taken regularly in order for it to be effective. Continue taking Moxonidine even when you feel better. Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor. Your blood pressure may increase if you stop this medicine suddenly.

If your doctor decides that you no longer need Moxonidine, he will usually lower your dose slowly before stopping it altogether. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.

If you are taking Moxonidine together with other blood pressure medicines and treatment has to be stopped, your doctor will tell you which medicine to stop first so that your body can adjust to the change. Make sure you are clear on how to stop your medicines.

You may take Moxonidine with or without food. It does not matter whether you take it before or after meals. Try to take it at the same time each day.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Moxonidine.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Moxonidine.

Inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions or any other illnesses:

- poor blood circulation such as Raynaud's syndrome or intermittent claudication
- Parkinson's disease
- epilepsy (fits)
- glaucoma (high pressure in the eyes)
- depression

Moxonidine is not meant for children younger than 16 years old.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, always inform your doctor, surgeon or dentist that you are taking Moxonidine.

Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?
Your blood pressure may rise to unsafe levels without you noticing it. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.

What lifestyle changes can I make to improve my blood pressure?

Regular exercise will help lower your blood pressure and improve your overall health. Speak to your doctor about what type of exercise would be suitable for you. If you have not exercised for a long time, start with light exercises such as slow walks. Regular exercise will also help you to maintain a healthy weight and this is important in helping you control your blood pressure.

If you smoke, you should try to quit. Smoking is harmful to your blood pressure, heart and overall health. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about ways to kick your smoking habit.

Try to keep stress levels under control as stress will cause your blood pressure to go up.

When should I not use this medicine?

Moxonidine may not be suitable for you if you have certain heart conditions, unstable angina (chest pain), liver or kidney disease. Alert your doctor if you have any of these conditions.

Alert your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction to a similar medicine called clonidine, or if you have a history of severe allergic reactions (such as face or throat swelling) to medications in general.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Moxonidine is used alone or together with other medicines to control your blood pressure.

It helps blood vessels to relax and open up, thereby lowering blood pressure.

What side effects could I experience?

Moxonidine may make you drowsy or dizzy. You may feel dizzy when getting up from a sitting or lying down position, especially if you are taking this medicine for the very first time. This is normal and should go away as you get used to the medicine. It will help if you get up slowly from a sitting or lying down position. If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down until you feel better. Do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Moxonidine may also cause dry mouth, headache, weakness, nausea, difficulty sleeping and skin flushing.

Alert your doctor if these side effects are severe or refuse to go away.

Other side effects are less common but may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor if you develop any of these symptoms:
- breathing difficulty
- swelling of the face, throat
- severe rash

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:

- medicines for high blood pressure
- antidepressants such as imipramine, clomipramine, desipramine, dothiepin, maprotiline, melitracen or amitriptyline
- sleeping pills such as diazepam

Always inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
