  • CEFRADINE 250mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Cefradine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take Cefradine at regular intervals as instructed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of antibiotic. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.

You may take Cefradine with or without food. If you experience stomach discomfort, you may take it immediately after a meal.

If you have been given capsules, swallow them whole with water.

If you have been given a syrup, shake the bottle well before use to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed. Use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure your dose.

Cefradine syrup is supplied in the form of a dry powder which needs to be mixed with water before use. Your pharmacist may do this for you, or she may teach you how to mix this up. Follow the instructions carefully.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have kidney or bowel disease, especially colitis (inflammation of the colon).

If you are going for a urine glucose test, inform your doctor that you are taking Cefradine as this medicine can interfere with the outcome of the test.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions (rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes) to similar antibiotics such as cefuroxime, cephalexin, cefaclor or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.

Inform your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin antibiotics such as ampicillin, amoxicillin or cloxacillin. Penicillins are related to cephalosporins and if you are allergic to one, you may be allergic to the other as well.

Why do I need this medicine?

Cefradine is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the lung, bladder, bones, joints and skin.

Cefradine can also be used to prevent infection when you undergo certain surgical procedures.

Cefradine belongs to a group of antibiotics known as cephalosporins.

What side effects could I experience?

Cefradine may cause diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, headache, fever, thrush or painful joints. These side effects are usually mild and will get better with rest. If you have diarrhoea, drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost. However, if you have severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps or bloody stools, alert your doctor. Let your doctor know if any other side effects are severe or do not go away.

As Cefradine may make you dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Refrigerate the syrup (between 2-8°C) once you have mixed the powder with water. Do not freeze it otherwise it will become less effective. Throw away any unused portion after 14 days.

If you have stored the syrup at room temperature (below 25°C) after mixing, throw it away after 7 days.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor if you are taking frusemide (also known as furosemide or water pills) or probenecid.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
