How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Naltrexone exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor. Follow your doctor's instructions strictly.

It is important that you stop taking any opioids for at least 7-10 days before starting on Naltrexone. This is because Naltrexone will cause withdrawal symptoms if you still have any trace of opioids in your body. Your doctor may perform a urine test to confirm your abstinence from opioids before prescribing Naltrexone for you.

You may take Naltrexone with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you have been given a medical alert, carry it with you at all times to inform medical personnel you are taking Naltrexone. This is so that you can be attended to appropriately if you need emergency medical treatment.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take Naltrexone if :

- you have liver disease
- you are still taking any opioid medicines
- you are experiencing opioid withdrawal symptoms such as craving, yawning, runny nose, sweating, restless sleep, weakness, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle cramps, chills, irritability and pain.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Naltrexone is used to treat alcohol dependence. Your doctor may prescribe Naltrexone as part of a management plan that includes counselling and education.

Naltrexone is also used to treat overdependence or addiction to opioid painkillers such as morphine.

Naltrexone has been used to treat drug abuse such as heroin.

What side effects could I experience?

Naltrexone may cause nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, constipation, loss of appetite, joint and muscle pain, headache, difficulty sleeping, nervousness, irritability, anxiety and depression.

Naltrexone may cause dizziness and tiredness. Do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Naltrexone may cause other side effects. Consult your doctor if you have unusual problems while being treated with Naltrexone.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- disulfiram (a medicine used to treat alcoholism)
- cough and cold medicines, diarrhoea medicines or painkillers that contain opioids
- thioridazine (a mood medicine)

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
