How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Pioglitazone exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Pioglitazone must be taken regularly for it to work well. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor.

You may take Pioglitazone with or without food.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

If you are a woman who has not reached menopause, you may have an increased risk of becoming pregnant even if you do not have regular menstrual periods or have stopped ovulating. As you should not get pregnant while being treated with Pioglitazone, ask your doctor about birth control.

Your doctor may need to do regular blood tests while you are being treated with Pioglitazone. This is to monitor your condition and check your response to the medicine.

You may have been warned about hypoglycaemia. Hypoglycaemia is the medical term for low blood sugar. It is important for you to recognise the symptoms of hypoglycaemia and correct the low blood sugar level. If you don't, you may faint.

How do I know if I am experiencing hypoglycaemia?
Some of the symptoms of hypoglycaemia include dizziness, headache, shaky hands, feeling hungry, weak or confused, problems speaking. These symptoms are your body's way of warning you that your blood sugar is dangerously low.

What should I do if I am experiencing hypoglycaemia?
You should take a drink or food containing sugar (for example, fruit juice, soft drinks, sweets) at the first sign of hypoglycaemia. If your symptoms do not improve, get medical help. Keep some glucose tablets (also known as dextrose tablets) with you at all times.

When should I not use this medicine?

Pioglitazone may not be suitable for you if you suffer from heart, liver or kidney disease. Alert your doctor if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or oedema (swelling of the ankles and legs due to water retention). Inform your doctor if you have any eye problems caused by your diabetes, for example, macular oedema or diabetic retinopathy.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant. Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Pioglitazone.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Pioglitazone.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

It is important for you to maintain a healthy diet and weight in order to help keep your diabetes under control.

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Pioglitazone reduces the amount of sugar made by your liver and increases your body's response to insulin which helps to keep your blood sugar in control.

Pioglitazone is meant to be taken as part of a complete diabetes care programme that should include exercise, a healthy diet and regular monitoring of blood sugar levels.

What side effects could I experience?

You may have some stomach discomfort such as nausea or diarrhoea, headache, tiredness, back and joint pain as well as flu-like symptoms such as a runny nose or sore throat.

You may gain some weight while being treated with Pioglitazone.

If you experience rapid weight gain over a short period of time, breathlessness or swelling of the legs or ankles, inform your doctor immediately.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines:

- other medicines for diabetes
- a cholesterol medicine called gemfibrozil
- HRT or birth control pills
- an antifungal medicine called ketoconazole

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
