  • DIAZEPAM 10mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Use Diazepam exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Do not use Diazepam for a longer period of time than instructed by your doctor.

In some medical conditions, such as anxiety, it is not advisable to use Diazepam long-term. See your doctor if Diazepam does not seem to help you.

In other medical conditions such as epilepsy, you may need to use Diazepam long-term. Do not stop using Diazepam suddenly as this may cause a loss of control over your epilepsy or withdrawal symptoms such as cramps, vomiting and sweating. Your doctor will reduce the dose of Diazepam gradually before stopping it completely.

Diazepam rectal solution will be administered by your doctor, nurse or caregiver.

How to administer Diazepam rectal solution:
1. Lie on one side (For children, turn them on their front).
2. Raise one leg up to your chest. If you laid on your right side, raise your left leg. If you laid on your left side, raise your right leg.
3. Remove the cap on the nozzle.
4. Gently insert the nozzle completely into the rectum, pointing it downwards. (In children, do not insert the nozzle completely. Insert it halfway).
5. Press the tube firmly and gently to release the medicine into the rectum.
6. Keep the tube completely pressed until you have taken the nozzle out of the rectum.
7. Press the buttocks together for a few minutes to prevent the medicine from leaking out.

Remain in the lying down position after Diazepam rectal solution has been administered. The medicine will take effect within 10 minutes.

A small amount of solution will be left in the tube. This is normal.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Alert your doctor if you are an alcoholic or if you have a history of drug abuse.

Diazepam is usually used for a short period of time only. Do not use Diazepam for a longer period of time than instructed by your doctor.

If you are using Diazepam as a long-term medication, you may need to have regular blood tests to monitor your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these blood tests.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Diazepam. Do not use Diazepam if you are pregnant .

It is important that you do not get pregnant while being treated with Diazepam. Use appropriate birth control.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Diazepam.

Alert your doctor if you have liver disease or an eye disease known as glaucoma.

Alert your doctor if you have lung or breathing problems such as sleep apnea, myasthenia gravis, porphyria, depression or a history of depression, any mood or psychiatric problems, or if you are at risk of falls.

Do not give Diazepam to children, unless specifically instructed by the child's doctor.

Diazepam should not be used by infants younger than 12 months.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice.

Why do I need this medicine?

Diazepam is used to treat severe anxiety or agitation and to control epileptic fits or seizures.

It may also be used to relieve muscle spasms caused by tetanus.

What side effects could I experience?

Diazepam may cause drowsiness and dizziness. If you feel drowsy or dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Diazepam can also cause tiredness, unsteady movement, confusion, double vision or blurred vision. It may also affect your memory.

Some people may experience hyperactivity, hallucinations, extreme anger, unpleasant dreams, increased muscle stiffness or abnormal behaviour. Alert your doctor if you experience these symptoms.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor quickly if you are taking any of these medicines:

- any medicines that can cause drowsiness, such as opioid (morphine-like) pain-killers, antihistamines and medicines for mood or personality problems
- antidepressants such as nefazodone, fluvoxamine
- antibiotics such as rifampicin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, telithromycin, doxycycline, isoniazid, nafcillin
- antifungal medicines
- seizure medicines such as phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbitone
- heart or blood pressure medicines such as diltiazem, nicardipine, verapamil, quinidine
- AIDS (HIV) medicines
- birth control pills
- asthma medicines such as theophylline

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
