How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Oseltamivir exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

You may take Oseltamivir with or without food.

Oseltamivir may be given as the capsule or oral suspension.

If you have been given the capsule, swallow the capsule whole. Do not break or chew the capsule.

If you have been given the oral suspension, shake the bottle well before use to ensure that the liquid is evenly mixed.

Take Oseltamivir at regular intervals as instructed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take Oseltamivir even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of medicine. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.

You should start taking Oseltamivir as soon as possible; within 48 hours after flu symptoms have started to appear or coming into contact with someone who has flu.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease.

Inform your doctor if you have fructose intolerance (a rare disorder characterised by an inability to break down fruit sugar) because the oral suspension contains sorbitol.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Oseltamivir is not a substitute for your annual flu immunisation or vaccine.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, severe rash, swollen eyes) to Oseltamivir.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Oseltamivir is an antiviral medicine.

It is used to treat or prevent certain types of flu. It shortens the time that you suffer from flu symptoms such as fever, stuffy nose, cough, sore throat and muscle aches. It can also prevent you from getting flu when there is an outbreak or if you have come into close contact with someone who has flu symptoms.

What side effects could I experience?

Oseltamivir may cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Oseltamivir may also cause diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, headache, difficulty falling or staying asleep. These side effects are usually temporary. If you have diarrhoea, drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Oseltamivir may cause other side effects. Consult your doctor if you have unusual problems while taking Oseltamivir.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Refrigerate the oral suspension (between 2-8°C) once you have mixed the powder with water. Do not freeze it otherwise it will become less effective. Throw away any unused portion after 10 days.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take Oseltamivir with probenecid, a gout medicine.

Oseltamivir should not be started if you have received a flu vaccine that is sprayed into the nostrils within the past 2 weeks. You should wait for at least 48 hours after the last dose of Oseltamivir before receiving this type of vaccine.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
