How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Erlotinib exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Do not stop this medicine unless your doctor has advised you to do so.

Take Erlotinib on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after food.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have stomach ulcers, liver, kidney or heart disease.

Alert your doctor if you develop any signs of liver trouble, such as yellowing of the eyes or skin, nausea, vomiting or pain near the stomach area.

For as long as you are taking Erlotinib, you will need to have regular blood tests to check your body's response to the medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have blood tests.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant. Do not take Erlotinib if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby soon. If you become pregnant while on Erlotinib, alert your doctor immediately. Erlotinib may cause harm to your unborn child. Both men and women must use proven birth control methods while being treated with Erlotinib. You may wish to discuss birth control methods with your doctor.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Erlotinib.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice.

Do not eat raw food or food that is not cooked thoroughly, such as sushi and soft-boiled eggs. Meat should be cooked until well-done. Do not take unpasteurised milk, cheese or fruit juice.

Why do I need this medicine?

Erlotinib is used to treat lung cancer. It is used when the cancer is advanced or has spread to other parts of the body.

It may also be used to treat cancer of the pancreas.

What side effects could I experience?

Rashes, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite are common side effects of Erlotinib. Usually, these side effects are not severe and can be managed with simple medication and rest. If you have diarrhoea, make sure you drink plenty of water, unless you have been specifically told not to. Nausea, vomiting and appetite loss can be managed by taking several smaller meals instead of a few large meals. However, if any of these side effects are severe or do not go away, inform your doctor quickly.

Eye irritation may also occur. Inform your doctor quickly if you experience eye pain with redness, tearing and blurred vision. Also alert your doctor if you have sudden or worsening breathlessness, breathing problems or cough.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Alert your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:

- Blood-thinning medicine known as warfarin
- A heart medicine known as digoxin
- Blood pressure medicines such as diltiazem and verapamil
- Antifungal medicines such as ketoconazole, fluconazole, itraconazole and voriconazole
- Antibiotics such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin
- TB medicines such as rifampicin
- Epilepsy medicines such as phenytoin and carbamazepine
- Herbs such as St. John's Wort

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
