How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Lymecycline exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take Lymecycline at regular intervals as instructed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of antibiotic. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.

Take it on empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, systemic lupus erythematosus (also known as SLE or lupus) or a muscular problem known as myasthenia gravis.

If you are being treated with Lymecycline for STD, you should follow your doctor's advice on ways to prevent passing the disease to others. You should also avoid sexual contact until the doctor certifies that you are cleared of the infection.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions (rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes) to similar antibiotics such as doxycycline, minocycline, oxytetracycline and tetracycline.

Do not take Lymecycline if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Do not give Lymecycline to children unless directed by the doctor.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Do not take Lymecycline with dairy products (for example milk, cheese, yogurt or ice-cream) as they could reduce the effectiveness of Lymecycline. Take Lymecycline at least 2 hours before or after you have taken any dairy products.

Why do I need this medicine?

Lymecycline is an antibiotic used to treat acne. It is also used to treat certain bacterial infections of the lung and stomach; dental infections and sexually-transmitted diseases (STD).

Lymecycline belongs to a group of antibiotics called the tetracyclines.

What side effects could I experience?

You may have diarrhoea, nausea and stomach discomfort. These side effects are usually temporary and should get better with rest. If you have diarrhoea, drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost. However, if you have severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps or bloody stools, alert your doctor.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Lymecycline may cause your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct and long hours of exposure to the sun and other forms of ultraviolet (UV) light like tanning beds or sun lamps.

Lymecycline may cause other side effects. Consult your doctor if you have unusual problems while taking this medicine.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children. Protect from light.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Lymecycline should not be taken with antacids containing aluminium, calcium or magnesium as well as multivitamins and minerals containing calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc. These medicines may reduce the effectiveness of Lymecycline. Take Lymecycline at least 2 hours before or after these medicines.

Alert your doctor if you are taking the following medicines:
- isotretinoin, tretinoin (other medicines treating acne)
- frusemide, hydrochlorothiazide, indapamide or quinapril (heart or blood pressure medicines)
- warfarin (a blood-thinning medicine)

Inform your doctor if you are taking birth control pills. Lymecycline may decrease its effectiveness. You may wish to discuss alternative birth control methods with your doctor or pharmacist.

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
