  • VORICONAZOLE 40mg/ml

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Voriconazole exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take Voriconazole at regular intervals as instructed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of medicine. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.

Fungal infections usually take a longer time to heal. You may need to take Voriconazole for a few weeks or months, depending on your doctor's advice.

Take Voriconazole at least 1 hour before or after a meal.

If you have been given the oral liquid (also known as a syrup), take it 1 hour or 2 hours after a meal.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have heart or liver disease.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction (breathlessness, rashes, swollen eyes) to similar antifungal medications such as fluconazole, itraconazole and ketoconazole.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while being treated with Voriconazole. Use an effective birth control method while being treated with Voriconazole. You may wish to discuss birth control options with your doctor or pharmacist.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Voriconazole.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Voriconazole is an antifungal medicine. It is used to treat certain serious fungal infections in your body and blood.

It can also be used to treat fungal infection of the oesophagus (the tube through which food passes from the throat to the stomach).

What side effects could I experience?

Voriconazole may cause diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain, fever, rash, headache and swelling of the hands or legs. These side effects are usually temporary.

You may also experience some problems with your vision, such as blurring. Always keep your doctor updated of any changes in your vision. If you are not able to see clearly, avoid driving and any activities in which you need to be alert.

Voriconazole may cause your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct and prolonged exposure to the sun and other forms of ultraviolet (UV) light like tanning beds or sun lamps.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Voriconazole may cause other side effects. Consult your doctor if you have unusual problems while taking this medicine.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Store the powder for oral suspension in the refrigerator between 2-8°C. Once you have mixed the powder with water, the oral suspension can be stored at room temperature of up to 30°C. Do not refrigerate or freeze it. Throw away any unused portion after 14 days.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

- cisapride (a gastric medicine)
- terfenadine, astemizole (medicines for allergy)
