  • TENOFOVIR 245mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Tenofovir exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Tenofovir is best taken with food.Try to take it at the same time each day.

If you have problems swallowing the tablet, you may dissolve it in at least 100ml of water, orange juice or grape juice. Swallow it immediately after the tablet dissolves.

Take Tenofovir at regular intervals as instructed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take Tenofovir even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor. Your condition may worsen if the medicine is stopped suddenly.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions, or any other illnesses:
- kidney disease
- other types of liver disease
- disease of the pancreas
- osteoporosis or any other problems with your bones
- high cholesterol levels
- problems with your weight
- diabetes

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to have a baby. Use effective birth control methods while being treated with Tenofovir.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Tenofovir. If you have HIV, it is best that you do not breastfeed as HIV passes into the breast milk. Avoid breastfeeding in order to reduce the risk of passing HIV to your baby.

Tenofovir is not a cure for HIV or hepatitis. It only helps to slow down the development of HIV and hepatitis infection.

Tenofovir does not reduce your risk of passing the HIV or hepatitis infection to others through sexual contact or through contamination with infected blood. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid spreading HIV or hepatitis to others.

Tenofovir may weaken your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to infections. Avoid crowded places and people who are sick to minimise the risk of catching an infection. Always keep your doctor updated on your condition and go for your appointed check-ups.

While being treated with Tenofovir, you will need to have regular blood tests. These blood tests help your doctor to monitor your condition and the health of your liver. Your doctor will advise you about how often you will need to have these blood tests.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, always inform your doctor, surgeon or dentist that you are taking Tenofovir. Do not receive any vaccinations without first checking with your doctor.

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, severe rash, swollen eyes) to Tenofovir.

Tenofovir is not meant for children younger than 12 years old.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Tenofovir is used together with other anti-viral medications to treat Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection. HIV infection can lead to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

Tenofovir is not a cure for HIV. It only helps to keep the virus in check and can help improve the quality of life. It does not prevent the spread of HIV to other people.

Tenofovir is also used on its own or together with other medicines to treat hepatitis B virus infection of the liver.

What side effects could I experience?

Tenofovir causes dizziness. Do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other common side effects of Tenofovir include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pain, stomach wind, headache, feeling weak and tired, flu-like symptoms, mood changes, rashes and difficulty sleeping.

Inform your doctor if these symptoms are severe or refuse to go away.

Other side effects are not common but may be serious. You may need urgent medical attention. Alert your doctor immediately if you develop any of these side effects:

- lactic acidosis. Alert your doctor immediately if you notice severe stomach discomfort or cramps, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, muscle cramp or pain, unusual tiredness or weakness. These may be symptoms of a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis.

- chest pain
- unusual tiredness, breathing problems, weakness, bluish lips or fast heartbeat
- feeling thirsty and passing a lot of urine, or if your urine is unusually dark
- signs of an infection such as fever, chills, persistent cough, flu-like symptoms, breathlessness or sore throat
- white patches on your tongue or the inside of your mouth
- unusual bruising or bleeding
- joint aches and pains
- joint stiffness and problems moving around
- muscle weakness or pain
- stomach or abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting, increased heart rate, rapid breathing, giddiness, fever and yellowing of the skin and whites of your eyes
- fat accumulation around the neck, abdomen or chest

Alert your doctor if you experience any other side effects while being treated with Tenofovir.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Do not take Tenofovir together with another antiviral medicine known as adefovir.

Alert your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines:

- other antiviral medicines such as ganciclovir, valganciclovir, cidofovir, foscarnet, didanosine, lopinavir/ritonavir, atazanavir and darunavir
- medicines for organ transplant such as tacrolimus
- antibiotics such as amikacin, gentamicin or kanamycin
- other medicines such as pentamidine, interleukin-2

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
