  • ANAGRELIDE 0.5mg

How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Anagrelide exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Anagrelide must be taken exactly as directed for it to work well. Continue taking Anagrelide even when you feel better. Anagrelide helps to control your condition but does not cure it. Do not stop taking Anagrelide unless instructed by your doctor.

You may take Anagrelide with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you have heart or kidney disease, or if you have a history of bleeding disorders.

If you are going for an operation, including minor operations and dental work, inform your doctor or dentist that you are taking Anagrelide.

It is important to keep all appointments with your doctor. You may need to have routine blood tests to monitor your condition and check your response to the medicine, especially during the first few months of starting Anagrelide.

When should I not use this medicine?

Do not take Anagrelide if you are pregnant. It is important that you do not get pregnant while being treated with Anagrelide. Discuss contraceptive methods with your doctor.

Do not breastfeed while you are being treated with Anagrelide.

Alert your doctor if you have liver disease.

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Anagrelide is used to treat a disorder in which there are too many platelets in the blood.

Platelets are special cells in the blood which help blood to clot. In normal situations, platelets help to control bleeding. For example, platelets help to make sure that we do not bleed too much from a cut in the skin, by forming a blood clot to close the wound. However, when there are too many platelets in the blood, there is a high risk of harmful blood clots forming. These blood clots may block blood from flowing smoothly and may even cause a heart attack or a stroke.

Anagrelide works by reducing the number of platelets in the blood.

What side effects could I experience?

Anagrelide may cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

You may feel dizzy when getting up from a sitting or lying down position, especially if you are taking Anagrelide for the very first time. This is normal and should get better as your body adjusts to the medicine. It will help if you get up slowly from a sitting or lying down position.

Headache, tiredness, diarrhoea, nausea and stomach discomfort are common side effects with Anagrelide. Let your doctor know if these side effects bother you or if they do not go away.

Less commonly, Anagrelide may cause some side effects which can be serious. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience:

- fast or irregular heartbeat
- chest pain
- unusual bleeding, especially excessive bleeding or bleeding that takes a long time to stop
- unusual bruises, especially if the bruises appear by themselves or if they cover a large area
- sticky, black bowel movements
- breathlessness

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

Inform your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially these listed here:

- other blood-thinning medicines such as cilostazol, warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, ticlopidine, dipyridamole
- any heart medicines

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
