How do I take/use this medicine?

Take Raloxifene exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Raloxifene is meant for long-term use. It must be taken regularly for it to work well. You may need to take Raloxifene for some time before the full benefits can be felt. Continue taking Raloxifene even when you feel better. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor.

You may take Raloxifene with or without food. Take it at the same time every day.

Swallow it whole. Do not chew or crush the tablet.

What should I take note of while using/taking this medicine?

Inform your doctor if you have any of these conditions or any other illnesses:

- kidney disease
- previous history of breast cancer
- elevated blood triglycerides (fats in the blood)

Raloxifene may not be suitable for you if you are confined to a bed or wheelchair, or if you are going for an operation which will require you to have a long period of bed rest.

If you travel, try to avoid prolonged periods of restricted movement as there is an increased risk of developing blood clots with Raloxifene. If you are on a long flight, move and stretch your legs at regular intervals to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

You will need to have regular breast examinations, mammograms and blood tests while being treated with Raloxifene. Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor.

Ensure that you take enough calcium and vitamin D while being treated with Raloxifene. Your doctor will advise you about how much of these supplements to take.

You should also include the following lifestyle changes to further reduce the risk of osteoporosis:
- regular exercise
- reduce intake of alcohol
- stop smoking

When should I not use this medicine?

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant. Do not take Raloxifene if you are pregnant. Raloxifene can cause harm to the unborn baby. Use effective birth control methods while being treated with Raloxifene.

Alert your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Do not breastfeed while being treated with Raloxifene.

Alert your doctor if you have any of these conditions:

- liver disease
- heart disease
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- previous stroke or "mini-strokes"
- cancer of the uterus or cervix
- unexplained vaginal bleeding
- a history of blood clots (for example, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism or blood clots in the eyes)

Are there any restrictions on the type of food I can take?

Avoid alcohol.

Why do I need this medicine?

Raloxifene is used to strengthen thin and weak bones in people who have or are at risk of osteoporosis. It helps to stop the loss of bone and also helps to increase bone mass. This helps to reduce the risk of getting a fracture.

Raloxifene is also used to reduce the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis or those at high risk for invasive breast cancer.

What side effects could I experience?

Some common side effects of Raloxifene include flu-like symptoms, hot flushes, headache, leg cramps, swelling of the legs, feet and hands. You may also experience nausea, diarrhoea, indigestion, stomach pain, weight gain, leg cramps, muscle spasms, muscle ache, joint pain, difficulty sleeping, mood swings and increased sweating.

Raloxifene may cause dizziness but this is not common. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Inform your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or refuse to go away.

Other side effects are less common but may be serious. You may need immediate medical attention. Stop taking Raloxifene and alert your doctor immediately if you develop any of these side effects:

- severe or persistent pain or swelling in the legs (especially lower legs) or an unexplained sensation of heat in your lower leg
- severe or persistent swelling of the hands or feet
- chest pain
- difficulty breathing
- coughing up blood
- eye pain or changes in your vision

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.

Can I take/use this with other medicines?

These medicines should not be taken at the same time as Raloxifene. If you are taking any of these medicines, there should be an interval of at least 2 hours between these medicines and Raloxifene:

- cholestyramine (a medicine to lower cholesterol)
- thyroxine (a thyroid medicine)

Alert your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking warfarin (a blood-thinning medicine), diazepam (sleeping pill or sedative) or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) such as oestrogens.

Always inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
